Press play, and 山 becomes mountains, 河 melts into a river, 生 sprouts into a meadow.

But the poem isn’t really the story. The story is what learning Mandarin has been teaching me about culture — and about jade.

Language as a Door into Culture

When you learn a language, you don’t just learn words. You learn what a culture holds precious. Mandarin kept handing me stones.

I learned that 玉 (yù), jade, isn’t just a gemstone in Chinese culture — it’s a whole philosophy. Jade is 温润, warm and gentle. It’s associated with virtue, with the character of a good person. Confucius reportedly said a gentleman’s virtue is compared to jade. For thousands of years it’s been buried with emperors, carved into bi discs and cong tubes, worn as pendants to protect the living and accompany the dead.

You don’t get that from a vocabulary list. You get it by following a word until it opens a world.

A Stone Held Precious on Two Continents

Then something strange and wonderful happened: I learned that jade — the same stone, in a different form — is also deeply sacred in the Indigenous cultures of the Americas. In Nahuatl and across Mesoamerica, jadeite was prized above gold. It was associated with water, maize, life, and the breath of gods. The Maya buried their kings with jade masks. The stone meant roughly the same thing on opposite sides of the planet: not wealth, but life.

So I bought a bracelet. Guatemalan jade — half black, half blue. A small, tangible piece of that shared regard. Something that two cultures, with no contact, independently looked at and said: this is sacred.

Writing in a New Language

This morning I sat down and wrote poems in Mandarin. Not because I’m good at it — I’m not — but because I wanted to use it. To reach for the feeling that comes when a language starts to become yours, even a little.

The poem on the site came out of that morning. 法术在手 — magic is in my hand. I was trying to capture the feeling of holding a language, and a stone, and a culture’s whole way of seeing the world, all at once. 阳作青生, 阴作黑生 — sunlight brings forth green life, shade brings forth black life. The bright side and the dark side both making something alive.

That’s what I love about learning Mandarin so far. It isn’t just grammar. It’s a way of looking at the world where a single character can hold the sun inside it, where a stone can mean virtue, where two civilizations on different continents can agree on what’s beautiful.

The site is small. The poem is four lines. But it’s the most honest thing I could make right now: a beginner, holding a language and a stone, trying to say something true.

玉生. The living jade.

The video itself was animated with the help of ai tools.

I built a small site this week: 玉生 The Living Jade — a four-line poem in Mandarin where each...

[1

post-1416","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
